TCU Horned Frogs Football Team in 2025 Season
The TCU Horned Frogs would have one of the best football seasons in the history of the school, but the 2014 season would still end in disappointment. TCU started the season with three easy games against Samford, Minnesota and SMU. The Horned Frogs would win their first three games with by a total score of 134-21. TCU would get their first test when they took on the 4th ranked Oklahoma Sooners at home on October 4th. TCU stunned the Sooners with a 4th quarter touchdown to win the game 37-33. The victory over TCU would propel them to 9th in the rankings, but they would have another tough test when they faced 5th ranked Baylor Bears on the road. In one of the most exciting games of the college football season, Baylor would overcome a 21 point deficit with 10 minutes left in the game to win 61-58.
TCU would quickly respond after the disappointing loss by defeating the 15th ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys 42-9. The Horned Frogs would put their great offense on display in the next game when they scored 82 points on Texas Tech. TCU would have three close victories over West Virginia, Kansas State and Kansas. TCU was entering the last game of the season as the 3rd ranked team in the nation when they destroyed Iowa State 55-3 to go 11-1. TCU looked like a lock to get one of the spots in the first college football playoff, but the playoff committee would slide them all the way down to 6th after impressive victories by Ohio State and Florida State in their conference championship games. The lack of championship game in the Big 12 ultimately cost TCU a shot a National Championship, but they would prove they were one of the best teams in the country by destroying Ole Miss 42-7 in the Peach Bowl. They would end the season as the 3rd ranked team in college football.
Heated TCU Horned Frogs Rivalries
TCU vs Texas Tech
This antagonistic matchup dates back to 1926. TCU was actually the first Southwest Conference opponent of Texas Tech. To the victor go the spoils and the Saddle Trophy, and you would think it was made of gold the way of these two in-state rivals battle each other. Also known as the “West Texas Championship”, Texas Tech – TCU is more than just a bitter rivalry. Both teams play in the competitive Big 12 conference. If you think records and ranks mean anything in this contest, think again. When both teams have been ranked in the Top 25, the higher ranked team has lost 5 out of 12 times.
TCU vs SMU
The TCU clash with Southern Methodist University every year is named the “Battle for the Iron Skillet.” As of 2013, TCU leads this heated contest 45 – 40 – 7. The matchup dates back to when both teams were members of the Southwest Conference. Since both colleges are located in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, fans, players, coaching staffs and alumni ensure this will be a “no love lost” meeting every year.
TCU vs Baylor
The Revivalry series is tied 51 – 51 – 7 as of 2014. Dating back to 1899, the origins of the hatred between these 2 teams on the football field dates back to when both schools were located in Waco, Texas. In 1971, TCU coach Jim Pittman actually collapsed and died on the sideline of this acrimonious affair. This is also one of the most played rivalries in all of NCAA college football history. TCU fans are still upset that Baylor was asked to join the Big 12 conference ahead of their program back in 1996. The fact that both schools now play in the strong Big 12 conference means that this age-old in-state rivalry will have more than emotional implications for years to come.
